Congress contemplates Alappuzha seat; Awaiting AICC's decision

g

ALAPPUZHA: The state Congress leadership's stance is to field sitting MPs in all constituencies except Alappuzha, which they lost last time. However, there's uncertainty regarding who will contest in Alappuzha, as the decision ultimately rests with the AICC.

The screening committee hasn't put forth any candidate suggestions for Alappuzha. There's been a suggestion for AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal to run, with Venugopal expressing readiness if the party recommends him.

The final decision hinges on Rahul Gandhi's potential contest in Wayanad. If Rahul chooses to contest in Wayanad, Venugopal may not contest in Alappuzha. Additionally, challenges in adhering to community equations in candidate selection have delayed announcements for Alappuzha.

Currently, there's no representation from the Muslim community among Congress candidates. The proposed candidates for Alappuzha include former MLA and KPCC General Secretary A.A Shukur, KC Venugopal, and Rahul Mankoottathil. Concerns have also been raised about the absence of representation from the Ezhava community, a significant force in Alappuzha's politics. Despite past successes by leaders like Vakkam Purushothaman and V.M. Sudheeran, no Ezhava candidate has been fielded in recent Lok Sabha elections due to the failure of VM Sudheeran.

The final decision in Alappuzha will depend on Rahul's decision regarding Wayanad and the consideration of a Muslim candidate there.
