Country's majority population will become minority one day, congregations where conversions take place must be stopped: Allahabad HC

allahabad-hc

NEW DELHI: The Allahabad High Court has ordered an immediate end to the conversion of the majority of the population. Justice Rohit Ranjan Aggarwal observed that if not, the day will come when the majority population will become a minority. Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal said that the court has noticed the conversion of people belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and economically backward to Christianity in Uttar Pradesh.

The judge's remarks came after denying bail to the accused Kailash, who was arrested under the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. Kailash is accused of bringing the villagers of Hamirpur to Delhi and converting them to Christianity. Co-accused Sonu Pastor had secured bail earlier.

A woman named Ramkali Prajapati filed a complaint with the police stating that villagers, including her brother Ramphal, who was mentally weak, was taken to a religious meeting in Delhi and they had not returned yet and they had been converted.

Villagers are taken to the national capital by convincing them that there will be prosperity in their lives. The High Court took this seriously. The bail was denied considering that Kailash's role in religious conversion is clear in the testimony recorded by the police.

Violation of the Constitution

  • The court observed that religious conversion is a violation of constitutional provisions.
  • Article 25 of the Constitution mentions the rights related to freedom of religion. It is a provision that gives freedom and right to citizens to practice, adopt and propagate their religion.

The court said that the word 'propagation' means to promote, but it does not mean to convert any person from his religion to another religion. The Constitution does not allow conversion from one faith to another.
