Birth-death registration no longer easy; Strict regulations from October 1

NEW DELHI: The central government has tightened regulations for delayed registration of births and deaths. The provisions will come into effect from October 1. The provisions introduced under the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2026, will be implemented from that date. The central government announced this through a gazette notification issued by Registrar General of India Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan.

Under the new provisions, a period of up to one year will be available for registering births and deaths. If the registration is delayed, a fine will be imposed, and permission from authorities such as a magistrate or sub-divisional magistrate will also be required. Before registration, the concerned authority must verify and establish the authenticity and accuracy of the birth or death details.
