THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The re-ignition of the Thrissur Pooram disruption controversy, which was almost over after the last parliamentary elections, has been criticized as a planned move by the CPM and the chief minister. It is alleged that Thrissur Pooram is once again being made a controversy to overcome the public sentiment against giving protection to PP Divya in the suicide case of ADM Naveen Babu. Efforts are being made to avoid Divya becoming a topic of discussion in the by-election as much as possible.
Further political moves will be based on the verdict of the Thalassery Principal Sessions Court on the anticipatory bail plea of PP Divya. It is suspected that the new controversy was sparked as the Rs 100 crore bribery controversy related to NCP did not make an impact. The argument raised after six months as if pooram was not disturbed is contrary to the stand taken by the government inside and outside the assembly.
There are concerns in the LDF that they will not benefit in the by-election and the BJP will gain. There is still a strong feeling, including in the CPI, that the disruption of the Thrissur Pooram held in April last year under the supervision of ADGP Ajith Kumar is what led to the opening of the BJP account in Thrissur. This also paved the way for the removal of ADGP Ajith Kumar from the law and order post after much hue and cry. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in the assembly that the pooram disruption incident will be investigated in detail. A high-level police investigation into the matter is continuing.
Strong opposition from CPI
The chief minister had corrected the other day that Thrissur pooram was not disturbed and only fireworks, which were part of the pooram, were disrupted. The CPI immediately rejected it. CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam replied that the pooram was not held properly and the conspiracy behind it should be investigated. Opposition leader VD Satheesan also alleged that the change in the chief minister was to save the culprits and help the BJP. Press release issued by the Chief Minister's Office in this regard is proof that the Chief Minister is sticking to his new argument. CPM state secretary MV Govindan and Devaswom minister VN Vasavan justified the chief minister's new claim. The CPI is also deeply dissatisfied with this.
