Live-in couple’s drunken brawl turns ugly, four cops attacked in Kochi

KOCHI: Four police personnel, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector, were assaulted in Kalamassery. They had arrived to intervene in an argument between a young man and woman who live together. The two were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time. One person has been arrested and a search is on for another.

The injured police personnel were Kalamassery police station ASI L. Sam Leslie, 55; SCPO Sreejith, 35; and CPOs Arjun, 46, and Basil, 37. Sreejith suffered an injury to his palm, while Arjun sustained an injury to his right elbow.

Vinoy, 23, of Nikarthithara House, Njarakkal, Vypin, was arrested in connection with the incident. Police have launched a search for his friend Bovin of Kalamassery, who fled the spot. Saniya, who lives with Vinoy, was released after being directed to appear before the police.

The incident occurred around midnight on Sunday at Njalakath in Kalamassery. Vinoy and Saniya were travelling by bike from Ernakulam after consuming alcohol when they met with an accident at Kaloor. They later went to their friends, where an argument broke out over the accident.

Police arrived after being informed of the incident and attempted to take them into custody. The police personnel were allegedly attacked.

Vinoy allegedly smashed the mirror on the left side and damaged the VIP antenna. He also allegedly struck an SI on the head with a mobile phone. His friend Bovin also allegedly attacked the police personnel.

A case has been registered against Vinoy, Bovin and Saniya for creating a disturbance in a public place. Police are also checking whether they had used synthetic drugs and whether they have any criminal background.
