THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KPMS General Secretary Punnala Sreekumar has said that the central government should make a law to override the Supreme Court order that ceiling should be imposed on Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes reservations and states should do sub-classification. He was inaugurating the protest organized by the Dalit Adivasi Samyukta Samiti in front of the Raj Bhavan.
Tens of thousands of people from various districts participated in the protest march from the Secretariat to the Raj Bhavan. The capital turned into a sea of protesters as people including women, children and the elderly lined the road from Statue to Vellayambalam. Due to this, the traffic on most of the roads of the city came to a standstill.
Punnala Sreekumar said that the Supreme Court's order to impose a ceiling on reservation is unconstitutional and divisive among communities. According to Articles 341 and 342 of the Constitution, Parliament has the power to make changes in Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes list. The Central Cabinet's decision not to implement the court judgment is not enough to override the existing process. Attempting to sub-categorize without conducting population and caste census will lead to conflicts. The state government should not take such a step. Punnala added that if necessary, they would go to the national capital with bogies of trains filled with protesters and organize an agitation to achieve the demands.

Dalit Adivasi Joint Committee Chairman KK Suresh presided.
