AHMEDABAD: A foetus was found abandoned near a drain in Surat's Apekshanagar on January 9. The foetus was found among empty cigarette and balloon packets. A group of children threw stones to disperse the Carrion-eating birds and raised an alarm when they realized that a body is there. The foetus was that of a girl. The locals informed the police and rushed to the hospital but the doctors declared it dead.

A subsequent investigation led police to the 16-year-old girl. Although initially questioned, the girl and her mother did not reveal the truth. Finally, the girl was found to be pregnant when she was subjected to a medical examination. During subsequent interrogation, the girl revealed that she met a 17-year-old boy on Instagram and they became friends.

The boy lived in a rented house in Pandesarar, Surat. The girl said that she had physical relations with him several times. When he came to know that she was pregnant, he fled to Mumbai. Police said that he sent her some pills to abort the baby. After consuming these, she had a miscarriage at home and she threw the foetus away. Police said that DNA samples of both have been sent for testing. Police said the boy has been taken into custody and will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.
