THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A cabinet meeting of the government has decided to conduct a judicial investigation into the Walayar rape and murder case of a thirteen-year-old and a nine-year-old girl. The meeting on Thursday appointed retired judge and minority commission chairman S. Haneefa to probe the lapses from police and the prosecution which led to the exoneration of all the accused.
There were allegations of political intervention in the case. The opposition had demanded a CBI probe into the case. The government had earlier filed an appeal in the Kerala High Court seeking further probe and a retrial into the case and had informed the court that there were lapses from the part of the police and the prosecution. The judicial probe will also be to find the responsible officers behind the lapses and their punishment.
