MUMBAI: The cracks within the Mumbai Indians (MI) camp appeared to turn into canyons on Thursday night as the five-time champions suffered a crushing 7-wicket defeat at the hands of Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab Kings (PBKS). While the 21-ball defeat was embarrassing enough, it was the visible friction between senior stars Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah that has left fans and analysts questioning the team’s internal harmony.

Despite a magnificent century from Quinton de Kock (112 off 60) and a solid fifty from Naman Dhir, Mumbai’s total of 195/6 proved to be insufficient. The Punjab Kings made a mockery of the chase, powered by a ruthless 80 from Prabhsimran Singh* and a captain’s knock of 66 from Shreyas Iyer*. Punjab crossed the finish line in just 16.3 overs, leaving the Wankhede crowd in a stunned silence.

Boiling point: Pandya vs. Bumrah

The most talked-about moment of the night didn't involve a boundary or a wicket, but a heated exchange on the field. During a crucial juncture of Shreyas Iyer’s innings, captain Hardik Pandya was seen animatedly directing Jasprit Bumrah to change his fielding position.

Bumrah, arguably the world's best bowler, appeared to disagree with the tactical shift, leading to a visible argument between the two. While Bumrah eventually conceded and moved to the designated spot, his body language for the remainder of the over suggested deep frustration. The premier pacer finished with expensive figures of 0/41, a rarity for his high standards.

Adding fuel to the fire was the reaction of former captain Rohit Sharma. While social media has been rife with rumours of a divided dressing room since the captaincy swap, yesterday’s footage seemed to offer a "smoking gun" for many.

Cameras frequently panned to Rohit, who appeared visibly distressed and isolated while the argument between Pandya and Bumrah unfolded. In several clips that have since gone viral, Rohit is seen shaking his head and looking away, further strengthening the narrative that the senior core of the team is at odds with Pandya’s leadership style.
