WASHINGTON: A heavily armed person opened fire during a White House dinner party attended by United States President Donald Trump. The shooting occurred during a White House Correspondents' Association dinner held at the Washington Hilton last night. Trump and his wife, Melania, were then rushed to a safe location by security personnel. Vice President JD Vance also attended the dinner.
Loud gunshots, which witnesses said were about a total of eight, were said to be heard during the incident. Journalists, celebrities, national leaders and other elites were present at the dinner. It is reported that about 2600 people were at the event.
Trump, who shared a note praising security officials after the incident, also announced on social media that the attacker had been caught. "The Secret Service and law enforcement acted quickly and courageously. The shooter was apprehended. I have recommended that the event proceed. However, it will be conducted entirely under the guidance of law enforcement. They will make a decision soon. Whatever that decision is, it will be a very different evening from what was planned," Trump said he had spoken with representatives of the event and would reschedule the dinner within 30 days.
The US intelligence community has confirmed that Trump and the first lady are safe. The agency said it is actively investigating the shooting and assessing the situation. No further details of the person apprehended have been released so far.
