HAMILTON: India are gearing up for the fifth and final T20I against New Zealand. Although India have already clinched the five-match series 3-1, their heavy defeat in Auckland could prompt the team management to make some tactical changes for the final match.
The biggest question ahead of today's match at Seddon Park in Hamilton is who will bat at No. 3. Sanju Samson and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are among the contenders, while Shubman Gill is also in the picture despite not being part of the squad. Gill's participation in the practice session ahead of the match has fuelled speculation about his possible return to the T20I side.
Gill could provide stability to the innings by anchoring it and rotating the strike if India lose an early wicket. However, Sanju has the ability to attack spinners and increase the scoring rate during the middle overs. Suryavanshi's impressive performance in the previous match has also strengthened his case.
Gill has a strike rate of 138.60 in 36 T20 matches and is considered a dependable batter who can bring stability to the team. Sanju, meanwhile, has been less consistent than Gill. However, his recent performances and ability to score quickly could work in his favour.
Despite enjoying strong backing from the team management, Sanju has failed to make a significant impact in the ongoing series. His scores in the four matches have been 67, 14, 18 and 4. A short break could help him regain his form, according to assessments within the team. This has also raised the possibility of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi returning to the playing XI as an opener, with Sanju making way for him in the final match.
