ABU DHABI: An expatriate is facing trial in Sharjah for assaulting an Arab woman. The Asian man reportedly mistook the woman for his wife and attacked her in front of her children. She was attacked when she was walking along a street with her children.

After approaching the Arab woman, the accused verbally abused her in a language she could not understand. She got frightened, ran away and sought refuge in a nearby shop. However, the accused followed her there, continued insulting her, and attacked her by grabbing her by the neck.

The woman told the court that the incident frightened her children. She also said that she had never seen the accused before and had no relationship or prior dealings with him. She said she does not know why he attacked her.

The accused did not deny the assault during interrogation. However, he claimed that he attacked the woman after mistaking her as his wife. He told the court that there were marital problems between him and his wife and that he had mistaken the Arab woman for his wife as they look similar.

The proceedings in the case are ongoing. After hearing his statements and examining the allegations, the Sharjah Misdemeanours Court referred the case for trial. The court also ordered to record the statements from witnesses.
