RAWALAKOT (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir): A massive public uprising has erupted in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir against restrictions imposed by Pakistan. The protest entered its 22nd day with a massive public demonstration held today at the Eidgah ground in Rawalakot, drawing thousands of participants. Protesters warned the Pakistani government that the province is no longer under Pakistan's control and that they are prepared to seek greater cooperation with India if their demands are not met.
The people of the province took to the streets to protest against administrative neglect, a severe economic crisis, price hikes, and government suppression. To prevent news of the agitation from spreading, authorities completely shut down internet services in the region starting June 5.
The protests are currently being held under the leadership of human rights activist Sardar Aman Khan. In an attempt to crush the popular movement, Pakistani authorities had blocked the supply of food and other essential commodities to the region for nearly two weeks, a move that further intensified the agitation. Speaking at the protest venue, Aman Khan asserted that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is not a part of Pakistan, adding that Pakistan needs them more than they need Pakistan.
Since June 9, protesters have also launched another major sit-in near the Line of Control. Sardar Aman Khan told his followers that if the blockade on food and other essential items continues, the people of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir will approach India for assistance. "We are not a part of Pakistan. We do not recognise Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir. The people here will not tolerate any dictator," protesters stated in a video released by them.
Meanwhile, the diaspora has stepped forward globally to support the protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Kashmiri expatriates are organising large-scale demonstrations in front of Pakistani embassies and diplomatic missions in various countries. Leaders of the protest committee have maintained that the struggle will continue across the province, including Muzaffarabad, until their political objectives are achieved.
