NEW DELHI: The UN Human Rights Office has expressed concern over the police action against protests in the national capital demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. It raised concerns over the mass detention of leaders, activists, lawyers, students and journalists and called for the immediate release of all those in custody.
The organisation said Indian authorities must ensure the right to peaceful assembly and protest. It stressed the need for dialogue and called for the release of those detained arbitrarily.
The UN Human Rights Office also emphasised that the actions of security forces must be in line with India's democratic traditions and international human rights obligations.
