Kerala to become Keralam: Amit Shah to introduce Bill in Lok Sabha today

NEW DELHI: The Union government will introduce a Bill in the Lok Sabha today to change the name of the state from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralam’ in the First Schedule of the Constitution. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to introduce the Bill. The Union Cabinet had approved the name change at a meeting held in February. The decision was based on a resolution passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly on June 24, 2024. If the Bill becomes law, the name ‘Kerala’ will be changed to ‘Keralam’ in Central government records relating to the state.

The state was formed on November 1, 1956, following the long-standing demand for a united Kerala for Malayalam-speaking people, which had been raised since the freedom struggle. However, the name of the state is recorded as ‘Kerala’ in the First Schedule of the Constitution.
