NEW DELHI: In just six months, the Central Railway generated Rs 323.50 crore. Who would have thought that selling scrap would bring such wealth? Scrap materials, including unserviceable engines, coaches, wagons, iron, and other items, were put up for auction, resulting in the coffers swelling. This figure covers the period from April to September and represents the highest scrap revenue recorded among railway zones during this timeframe.
In September alone, the revenue stood at Rs 70.42 crore, marking a record for Central Railway in monthly scrap sales. The auctioned items included old railway tracks, metal components, sleepers, and unserviceable engines, coaches, and freight wagons.
So far this financial year, 23 locomotives, 62 coaches, and 70 wagons have been sold. During the special cleanliness drive held from September 17 to October 2 alone, 4,884 tonnes of scrap were cleared, generating Rs 44.24 crore.
Clearing out unusable materials that had accumulated in yards and workshops also freed up additional space. In the previous financial year, Rs 6,813.86 crore was earned through the sale of scrap.
