15 Delhi-bound flights diverted as heavy rain, thunderstorms disrupt airport operations

NEW DELHI: Heavy rain and thunderstorms disrupted flight operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Monday, with 15 Delhi-bound flights diverted to other airports. Several flights were also delayed or cancelled amid the adverse weather conditions. Of the 15 diverted flights, 12 were sent to Jaipur, two to Chandigarh and one to Lucknow. Three of the flights diverted to Jaipur were international services.

Airlines also revised their flight schedules amid the weather conditions and warned passengers that flights could be delayed or cancelled. IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet advised passengers to check the latest status of their flights on their respective websites or mobile applications before leaving for the airport.

Heavy rain in Delhi and neighbouring areas led to waterlogging and severe traffic congestion in several parts of the city, affecting normal movement and airport operations.
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for heavy rain in some parts of Delhi and a yellow alert for moderate rain in other areas. The weather department also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 30-40 kmph in parts of the city. The weather department has forecast a reduction in rainfall from Tuesday.
