Expired food products worth crores seized from Amazon Warehouses

BENGALURU: Several expired food products were seized during searches at Amazon warehouses in Bengaluru. Goods worth around Rs 6 crore were confiscated from two warehouses. The seized items also included products that did not have expiry dates on them.

The raids by the food department were conducted at Devanahalli and Madiwala in Bengaluru. The searches were conducted based on information that medicines were being stored without the required licence. Medicines were also seized from both warehouses. The food products confiscated included cashew nuts, paneer and eggs. Following the searches, the warehouses were sealed and locked.

The Karnataka government had last month temporarily suspended the food licences of Amazon, Swiggy Instamart and BigBasket after it was found that the platforms had sold poisonous datura fruits online. The action against the online platforms was taken by the Karnataka Food Safety and Drugs Administration Department.

Authorities launched an investigation after receiving complaints that datura fruits and their seeds were being sold online. The investigation found that poisonous fruits and seeds were being displayed for sale as food products on various e-commerce platforms. Datura fruits and their seeds can cause serious health issues, including potentially fatal consequences, if consumed by humans.
