Heavy rain triggers red alert in Delhi; airport waterlogged, flights diverted

NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR as several parts of the region received heavy rain. The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms and strong winds. As heavy rain could intensify within a short period, people have been advised to remain cautious. Several roads across the city have been waterlogged, causing difficulties for commuters.

The heavy rain also led to waterlogging at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Several flights arriving in Delhi were affected by the bad weather, with around nine flights diverted. Domestic flights from Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Port Blair were also delayed.

Amid the disruption, IndiGo issued an advisory to passengers travelling to and from Delhi. The airline advised passengers to check their flight status through its website or app before leaving for the airport. It also asked travellers to allow extra time for their journey as traffic is likely to be slow due to waterlogging and heavy rain.

The IMD has further forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms across most parts of Delhi between 5 pm and 8 pm.
