LUCKNOW: A 28-year-old pregnant woman died after police kicked her while they arrived to arrest her husband. The dead is Anjali of Shikohabad in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad. Six police officers, including two sub-inspectors, have been suspended in connection with the incident.

The suspended are sub-inspectors Dharampal Singh, Satyapal Singh, head constables Mohan Singh, Arvind Kumar, and constables Bhavtosh Kumar and Kuldeep Kumar.
Gaurav, the woman’s husband, is an accused in a theft case. A police team arrived at his house in Labauha village at around 11:45 pm on Sunday to arrest him. The family alleged that sub-inspector Dharampal Singh kicked Anjali in the stomach while she was pleading with the police not to arrest her husband.

The woman, who fell to the ground after being kicked, was admitted to hospital after her condition deteriorated. However, Anjali died following childbirth on Monday morning. The newborn baby, who was in a critical condition, was shifted to a hospital in Agra.

Doctors said that though Anjali was brought to a hospital in Firozabad after her health deteriorated following childbirth, she had lost her life. After learning of Anjali’s death, the police released Gaurav.

Political protests intensified following the incident. Samajwadi Party General Secretary Ramjilal Suman staged a protest at the Shikohabad police station on Tuesday along with party workers. He demanded that a murder case be registered against the police officers involved in the incident.
