Techie ends life following dowry harassment; police register case against husband, in-laws

PUNE: A 33-year-old Pune Techie ended her life after alleging torture from her husband and in-laws over dowry. Trishna Rahul Sakpal was found dead at her home on September 29. The police registered an FIR against five individuals, including her husband, Rahul Sakpal, in connection with the incident.

Trishna married Rahul in 2018. A complaint filed by Trishna's father, Balakrishna Nigam, alleged that after the marriage, she was subjected to constant harassment with demands that she hand over her entire salary to her in-laws, transfer the ownership of her parents' flat to her mother-in-law, and purchase a flat worth one crore rupees for her father-in-law.

Unable to bear physical abuse, Trishna had returned to her parental home in 2021. Meanwhile, although her husband had filed a divorce petition to remarry, the case remains pending in court. In a suicide note recovered by the police, Trishna alleged that her husband, mother-in-law Vaishali, father-in-law Sanjay, sister-in-law Shaili, and father-in-law's mother Shakuntala Salunkhe were responsible for her death. A case was registered against the five individuals based on a complaint filed by her father.

In a similar case last month, a 23-year-old techie died by suicide following similar allegations of dowry harassment in Pune.
