NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Madras High Court order that directed the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that cows are not slaughtered in the state on Bakrid or any other day. The Vijay government had approached the Supreme Court challenging the High Court's orders banning cow slaughter.
In May, the High Court had ordered a ban on cow slaughter across the state, implementing a 1976 government order. The Vijay government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against this. The government issued an order in 1976 banning cow slaughter for milk production and improving the rural economy. Based on this, a division bench of Justices G R Swaminathan and V Lakshminarayanan of the Madras High Court had asked the Vijay government to ban cow slaughter.
