Guard forgot to lock cell, accused coolly walks out of Kundara police station

KOLLAM: Last day, Kundara police took Vaijesh (23) of Vaijith Bhavan in Puthennada, Ezhukone, into custody on a complaint of stealing wiring materials. The policeman on General Diary (GD) charge duty recorded a preventive arrest and locked him in a cell. After a nap, Vaijesh woke up at 1:30 am and found the cell unlocked. The guard was standing aside, talking to his friend. Without thinking, Vaijesh slowly removed the lock and walked out as if nothing happened. He even jumped over the wall and escaped.

The guard was supposed to lock the cell. Meanwhile, the DANSAF officer, who is the guard’s friend, arrived at the station. Police registered a case against him for escaping from custody and launched a search.

Wiring materials were stolen from a house in Kundara Nanthirikal two days ago. In addition to the family filing a complaint at Kundara station, an investigation conducted on their own revealed that Vaijesh had rented tools to cut wiring and plumbing materials from a shop in Nanthirikal. When the family learned that he had come to return these on Tuesday night, they stopped him. Upon learning of the incident, Kollam Rural Control Room SI Anilkumar reached the spot, took Vaijesh into custody, made him undergo a medical examination and brought him to Kundara station at 11 pm.

That night, only two people, including the GD in charge and the guard, were on duty at the station.
