THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is likely to receive rain over the next five days as severe cyclonic storm ‘Murasu’, which has formed over the Bay of Bengal, moves towards the coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of thunderstorms and strong winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph in the state from today until November 6.
Cyclone Murasu is currently centred over the central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of the southwest Bay of Bengal. It is likely to make landfall on the southern Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narasapuram, near Ongole, between 11.30 pm today and 4 am tomorrow. The cyclone is expected to bring winds of 100 to 110 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 120 kmph, when it makes landfall, according to the IMD.
Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation is prevailing over southern Kerala and adjoining areas. Another circulation has also formed over the central eastern Arabian Sea, off the Karnataka and south Maharashtra coasts. The IMD has warned that these weather systems could bring heavy rain to various parts of Kerala on different days.
A yellow alert has been issued for Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts today. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in these districts.
