PAYYANUR: An expert committee assessed that the doctors at Payyannur Baby Memorial Hospital committed a serious lapse in the death of toddler Devansh Shaurya. The baby was not given any treatment for the first six hours after reaching the hospital, making it clear that there was no major bleeding in the wound. The committee assessed that general anaesthesia was not needed for such a minor injury. The doctors recommended only the necessary treatment.
The hospital should have had the facility to overcome an accident committed due to general anaesthesia. With the facility unavailable, the doctors shouldn't have administered anaesthesia, said the district government pleader, Adv. K Ajith Kumar.
“The wound will start healing after six hours, so there was no need to do plastic surgery for a small wound. One cannot be blamed if he suspects some other ulterior motive of the hospital in suggesting serious treatment for the toddler who reached the hospital with a minor cut on his lip. We should also find out who gave such a treatment protocol to the doctors.” Ajith Kumar clarified that the report will be handed over to the police within two days.
The child's postmortem report also mentions that the cause of death was insufficient oxygen to the brain after general anaesthesia. The report also states that there was no need for surgery under general anaesthesia as the child's wounds were not deep.
