Three of family killed as drunk driver rams car into bike in Thrissur

THRISSUR: Just a day after the tragic death of eight students in Kaipamangalam, three members of a family met with a tragic end in a case of drunk driving in Thrissur. A five-month pregnant woman was among the victims. A case was filed against the car driver under a non-bailable section. Muneer (35), son of Nuruddin, a native of Chavakkad Edakkazhiyoor Khadiriya Road, his wife Shifna (24), and son Emil Aibak, died in the accident at Kurukkanpara Centre near Arthat Church in Kunnamkulam at 11.40 pm on Saturday.

The four-member group in the car, who were drunk, lost control of the vehicle and hit the Bullet in which the family was travelling. The car then crashed into a nearby electric post and went forward some meters.

The accident occurred while Muneer was returning from attending the wedding of Muneer's niece in Marathamcode. Muneer had stopped the vehicle and was attending a phone call by the roadside when the car crashed into them. The three seriously injured were pulled out by locals from a field 30-35 meters away. Muneer died on the spot. Muneer, who was working in Saudi Arabia, had returned on leave a month ago. Nanma Ambulance workers and locals rushed the injured to Daya Royal and Malankara hospitals, but they could not be saved. The bodies, after completing the inquest proceedings at Malankara and Daya hospitals, were handed over to the relatives after the postmortem at Thrissur Medical College. Eight engineering students from Dindigul died on Friday midnight when a car hit the back of a lorry parked on the national highway at Kaipamangalam.

The car carried four, including Ben, a native of Arthat. All four were drunk. Ben, a native of Kunnamkulam, who was driving the car, is absconding. A case was registered against him under a non-bailable section. Ajith, Shijin and Danish, natives of Arthat, who were in the car, were taken into custody by the police. Shijin, who was slightly injured in the accident, sought treatment. The police said that the car was speeding.
