Educational institutions to shut down till June 14th due to Shigella outbreak; Nipah virus confirmed in Kozhikode

KOZHIKODE: A 43-year-old man undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode has been confirmed to have contracted Nipah. The presence of the virus was confirmed in a preliminary test conducted at the Kozhikode Medical College.

The Feroke native was admitted to a private hospital a week ago with a high fever. Later, he showed symptoms, and his health condition deteriorated. Authorities said that the patient's condition is critical and he will be shifted to the Medical College Hospital immediately. A sample of the swab has been sent to the Pune Virology Institute for final confirmation. In the wake of the infection, the health department took steps to prepare a contact list of the patient and find the source of the virus.

In the wake of the Shigella virus outbreak, holidays were declared for educational institutions in Wayanad's Nenmeni, Ambalavayal and Noolpuzha panchayath and Bathery municipality. The educational institutions will shut down till June 14th and will open only after further instructions from the authorities.
