MALAPPURAM: After the horrific incident in Mananthavady, Wayanad, a wild elephant attack was reported again in Malappuram today. An elderly woman in Malappuram district, who was going to work at the forest department's plantation in the Karulai forest, was knocked down by the tusker. The elephant attacked Sainaba (62), a resident of Moothedam. The incident took place at 8:30 this morning.
Workers usually go to Shankarakodi to plant teak saplings and dig holes in a new plantation. Sainaba was among those workers today. The workers come to work here every day in the vehicles of those who have taken up contract work. Since there were not enough vehicles today, many resorted to walking when a tusker ambushed them.
As they were walking a little further from Cheenikunnu into the forest, a wild elephant came in front of them. With this, the group scattered. Seeing the people, the wild elephant also ran away. The wild elephant knocked down Sainaba in its attempt to flee the place. Sainaba suffered injuries to her ribs and lungs. She was taken to a private hospital in Edakkara by other workers and forest department officials, and then to Manjeri Medical College and then to Kozhikode.
