Speeding or negligence from NHAI: What led to fatal road accident in Kaipamangalam?

THRISSUR: No warning, no light, no directional signboard... The negligence of the National Highway Authority in the Kaipamangalam road accident cannot be ignored. According to allegations, the National Highway Authority is busy attempting to cover up the accident by putting the blame on speeding.

When coming downhill from the first flyover from the Guruvayur side, a signboard is installed directing traffic to divert. However, three lorries are parked in a way obstructing this view. It is clear from the CCTV footage that the car, which came from the right track, saw the lorry only at a close range (30m).

It is common for heavy vehicles, including goods lorries, to be parked illegally at many places on the National Highway. The authorities remain mute on the matter and let it pass. There are also allegations that the inspections by the police and the Motor Vehicle Department in areas prone to danger are ineffective.

In the morning, vehicles are allowed to go through one route and at night another. This is what confuses travellers on the national highway. It is common for traffic to be diverted after 9 pm as part of road construction. However, no safety signs or warning systems are installed accordingly. The lack of lighting makes the situation more dangerous. Reflectors are scarce.

Union Minister Suresh Gopi said the lorry driver committed a big sin in this case. Suresh Gopi talked to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on the phone and assured that strict patrolling would be carried out on the highway from now on. The Union Minister also informed that it was decided during the discussion to levy a fine of Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 against illegal parking on the national highway.
