THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Getting a driving licence in Kerala will now involve one more test, with the Transport Department introducing a hazard perception exam to assess an applicant's ability to identify and respond to potential dangers on the road. The new test will come into effect from December 1.

The hazard perception test will be conducted 30 days after an applicant clears the learner's test. It will be held in addition to the existing learner's test and driving test, and applicants will have to pass all three to obtain a driving licence.

The Transport Department has issued an order introducing the new test amid rising road accidents. The recent vehicle accident in Thrissur that claimed eight lives is also understood to have influenced the decision.

Test to follow video game format

The hazard perception test will follow a format similar to a video game. It will consist of 10 videos, with potentially dangerous situations appearing at different stages as each video plays. The test will assess how quickly applicants identify these hazards and how appropriately they respond to them.

The test will carry a total of 100 marks, with applicants required to score at least 60 marks to pass. Applicants can take the hazard perception test only after 30 days have passed since they cleared the learner's test. A driving licence will be issued only to those who pass the learner's test, hazard perception test and road test.
