Kerala to face power restrictions today; KSEB appeals for public cooperation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Partial power restrictions have been imposed in Kerala today as well amid a sharp rise in electricity consumption due to the intense heat. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) said the rainfall deficit caused by the El Niño phenomenon, along with high atmospheric temperatures, has led to a significant increase in power consumption compared with previous years.

The situation has been further complicated by a rise in electricity demand across the country, which has resulted in a significant drop in power availability through the power exchanges. A national power shortage of around 12,000 MW, along with reduced availability from central generating stations, has added to the pressure.

Peak-hour electricity consumption in Kerala has increased by around 800 to 900 MW compared with normal September levels. With sufficient power not available through the power exchanges and grid frequency declining, partial power restrictions may be imposed during peak hours today, September 9, from 6.30 pm to 12.30 am.

KSEB has urged the public to cooperate as much as possible by reducing electricity consumption, particularly during peak hours.
