KOLLAM: A routine workday turned into an absolute thriller for a group of employment guarantee (MGNREGA) workers in Kollam. What started as a regular cleanup of a local stream near the Maruthamonpally temple ended with the shocking discovery of a heavy plastic tin stuffed with silver jewelry.
While clearing the debris out of the canal, one of the workers' cleaning tools struck something unusually heavy beneath the surface. Dragging it out, they found a sealed plastic container. Battling a wave of anxiety, one of the workers bravely pried it open.
Instead of trash, the container was packed with glittering silver ornaments. The stunned workers immediately alerted the local ward member, who wasted no time in calling the cops.
The Pooyappally police rushed to the spot and took possession of the mysterious container. When officers emptied the tin, they uncovered a massive haul of around 40 pairs of silver ornaments, alongside a few bizarrely out-of-place items.
The inventory of the recovered loot includes:
The plot thickened even further when police combed the immediate area. Just a short distance from where the tin was found, they recovered an electronic weighing scale—the exact type powered by electricity and commonly used in commercial jewellery shops.
While it is technically possible that the container floated down the stream during a heavy flow, investigators strongly suspect foul play. The presence of a commercial-grade jewellery scale suggests the items may have been deliberately dumped, potentially linked to a local theft or burglary.
The Pooyappally police have officially launched a detailed investigation and are currently cross-checking recent theft reports and questioning owners of jewellery shops in the surrounding areas to trace the origin of the silver.
