Biometric KYC update: Consumers fear disruption in LPG cylinder booking

THRISSUR: Consumers are worried that LPG cylinder bookings could be disrupted if they do not complete their KYC update with biometric verification. Gas agencies have warned that technical issues may arise for customers who have not updated their details. However, oil marketing companies have clarified that, at present, only the LPG subsidy will be withheld for customers who have not completed the KYC process.

The companies had instructed consumers to complete their KYC online by June 30 to continue receiving the LPG subsidy. Customers were also informed through SMS alerts. The KYC update can be completed through LPG distributors, delivery personnel or the mobile apps of the oil companies. However, many consumers are yet to complete the process. Several gas agencies have been contacting customers over the phone, urging them to update their KYC. They have also warned that the facility to complete the KYC by visiting the agency in person is likely to be discontinued by the end of this week.

It is said that failure to complete the KYC update could lead to disruptions, including the blocking of LPG cylinder booking services. However, officials clarified that the option to update KYC through the oil companies' mobile apps remains available. There is still no clarity on whether accounts that have not completed biometric verification will continue to remain active. Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), eligible women from economically weaker households receive a subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder for up to four LPG cylinders a year. General category consumers receive a subsidy of Rs 40 per cylinder, while households with an annual income of more than Rs 10 lakh are not eligible for any subsidy.

How to complete biometric KYC

• Visit your LPG distributor with your Aadhaar card and LPG consumer passbook. Complete fingerprint authentication using the biometric scanner.
• Alternatively, download the mobile app of your LPG company, register using your mobile number and OTP, and complete the verification by scanning your eyes with your phone's camera and following the on-screen instructions.
