THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The spread of measles has become a major concern in Kerala's northern districts, with another death reported in Kannur. The number of cases is rising in Kannur, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts.

As of October 2026, a total of 538 people had tested positive for measles in the state. More than 1,000 people had developed symptoms, while over 160 cases were reported in Malappuram and Kozhikode districts alone. The disease has claimed four lives so far.

Measles cases, which had increased in 2023, declined in 2024 and 2025. However, the recent rise has raised fresh concerns. The latest victim was 15-year-old Dakshith Babu, a student from Thalassery, who died recently after contracting the disease.

Four students who were part of a school group that went on a trip to Kodaikanal had contracted the infection. Meanwhile, the Health Department has stepped up preventive measures and is closely monitoring the situation.

Low vaccination coverage behind rise in cases

Health Services Director Dr V Meenakshi said most infections were being reported among children who had not received the vaccine. She said the number of cases had increased in northern districts where vaccination coverage was low.

Measles can become severe among people with weak immunity, pregnant women and children. The Health Department is distributing Vitamin A supplements and conducting vaccination drives in affected districts.

Major symptoms

  • High fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Redness of the eyes
