Not Rs 5250, Rs 50,000 fine! MVD issues 'super fine' to jeep involved in flood rescue operations

ADOOR: The Motor Vehicles Department again fined a jeep involved in the Kerala flood rescue operations. A 'super fine' of Rs 50,000 was imposed on the Thar jeep of Kulanada native Amal. The action follows a High Court order prohibiting unauthorised modification of vehicles.

The fine imposed on the jeep used in the rescue operations in Aranmula during the last flood was controversial. During that time, the MVD fined the vehicle Rs 5250. The officials were subsequently suspended. However, the High Court intervened suo motu and upheld the officials' action and directed that all violations be included and fined. The suspension of the officials was subsequently withdrawn.

The vehicle was fined for having four tyres protruding. That is Rs 5,000 per tyre, or a total of Rs 20,000. For illegally installing 6 lights, it is Rs 5,000 per light, or Rs 30,000 total. The officials instructed the vehicle owner to pay the fine within seven days of receiving the notice and present it for inspection. The court also warned that the vehicle's registration would be cancelled for failure to comply with the rules.
