ALAPPUZHA: The 19-year-old woman, who allegedly threw her newborn baby girl through a toilet ventilation window shortly after delivery, has formally relinquished her parental rights. The teenager informed the District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) that she does not wish to keep the infant.
The newborn is currently stable and receiving specialised care in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. The mother is also admitted to the same facility under medical supervision.
According to official sources, once the mother is medically discharged, the infant will be transferred to the Alappuzha Shishuvihar, a specialised childcare home, for a 60-day observation and care period. Following the standard 60-day window, the CWC will legally assume permanent custody of the child, after which the biological mother will forfeit all future parental claims.
The harrowing incident transpired around midnight last Monday. The teenager arrived at the hospital complaining of severe abdominal pain. Shortly after her arrival, she went into the restroom, secretly delivered the baby, and immediately flung the newborn out of the ventilation window.
Local police have registered a case against the 19-year-old, charging her with attempt to murder.
Investigating officials revealed that the woman was residing in Ernakulam, where she was balancing her studies with part-time employment. During her time there, she was involved with a migrant youth from another state. However, she stated that they parted ways some time ago, adding that the biological father remains entirely unaware of both the pregnancy and the birth.
In her statement to the police, the teenager claimed she was oblivious to her pregnancy, asserting she believed her physical symptoms were due to an internal abdominal growth or tumour.
Family sources indicate that the woman had returned to her family home three months prior to the incident. She reportedly misled her father and younger sister—with whom she lived, as her mother is currently undergoing psychiatric treatment—by claiming she was treating a chronic stomach ailment at the Vandanam Medical College Hospital and needed to rest at home to complete her medication course.
The police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the delivery and abandonment remains ongoing.
