KOCHI: A 71-year-old woman lost her life from the fire that spread from the candle lit during power cut. She has been identified as Mariam Paily of Elamakkara.

She sustained burns on July 13. Mariam Paily was suffering from physical difficulties. When she lit a candle at the time of power cut, it fell and then the fire spread to her clothes causing serious burns. She lived alone as she had no immediate relatives. Hearing her screams, her neighbours arrived and rushed her to the hospital. Mariam Paily, who suffered 40 percent burns, died while undergoing treatment at the Kottayam Medical College. She will be laid to rest this evening.

One had lost his life yesterday due to power outage. The victim was M Krishnan (71) of Kaliyankandam house in Kenath Paramba near Palakkad Civil Station. Krishnan was in the hospital due to respiratory ailments and was shifted to his home last week with the help of an oxygen concentrator. The power outage occurred around 12 midnight on Thursday. Since the oxygen concentrator runs on electricity, it does not need to be refilled like an oxygen cylinder. For this reason, it is widely used among respiratory patients.
