Rain to dampen Onam celebrations? various parts of Kerala to receive heavy rainfall, orange alert issued in three districts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Several parts of Kerala are likely to receive very heavy rainfall today. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert in three districts- Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod. Isolated places in these districts are likely to receive very heavy rainfall. The IMD defines heavy rain as a situation where 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rain is received in 24 hours.

A yellow alert is in place for Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. These regions are likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall is defined as a situation where 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain is received in 24 hours. These regions are expected to receive rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.

Isolated moderate rainfall and winds reaching speeds of up to 30 kmph are likely in Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts over the next three hours. In all other districts, isolated light rainfall accompanied by strong winds up to 30 kmph is also expected, IMD said.

A well-marked low-pressure area is currently located over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the Odisha coast. Under its influence, Kerala is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall over the next five days. A yellow alert has been issued for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts tomorrow.
