Landslide in Wayanad

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A red alert was issued in Wayanad, considering the heavy rainfall and the landslides that wreaked havoc. Apart from Wayanad, the Indian Meteorological Department also issued a red alert for Kozhikode. An orange alert has also been issued for Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

The landslide occurred in the tunnel construction area near Meenakshi Bridge in Kalladi, Wayanad. The accident occurred near Meppadi. ​​It is also reported that one person died in the accident. The death toll may rise further. Six people are undergoing treatment in the hospital. A house and a church have been destroyed.

Rescue operations are ongoing at the site, with more earthmovers likely to reach the location in the coming hours. Minister T Siddique blamed unscientific construction methods for having invited the calamity in the region.
