Speed limits revised, maximum permissible limit of 60 kmph for two-wheelers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A high-level meeting chaired by Minister Antony Raju decided to revise the speed limit of vehicles on the state's roads as per the national notification. The speed limit on 6 lane national highway is 110 kmph, on 4 lane national highway the speed has been increased from 90 to 100 kmph, on other highways, MC road and 4 lane state highway it has been increased from 85 to 90 kmph. The permissible speed limit for vehicles up to 9 seats is 80 kmph on other state highways and main district roads, 70 kmph on other roads and 50 kmph on city roads.


For Light Medium Heavy Motor Yatra vehicles above 9 seats, the limit is 95 km on 6 lane national highway, 90 km on 4 lane national highway, 85 km on other national highways, MC road, 4 lane state highway, 80 km on other state highways and major district roads, 70 km on other roads, 50 km on city roads.

For light medium heavy category goods vehicles, the permissible limit is 80 km on 6 lane and 4 lane national highways, 70 km on other national highways and 4 lane state highways, 65 km on other state highways and major district roads, 60 km on other roads and 50 km on city roads.

As two-wheelers account for the majority of road accidents in the state, their maximum speed limit will be reduced from 70 kmph to 60 kmph. The maximum speed limit for three-wheelers and school buses will remain at the existing 50 km. A decision was taken to revise the speed limit after the AI cameras became operational in the state. The current speed limit in the state is set in 2014. Minister Antony Raju said that the new speed limit will come into effect from July 1. The high-level meeting was attended by Transport Secretary Biju Prabhakar, Assistant Transport Commissioner Pramoj Shankar and others.
