V T Balram hoisting the national flag

PALAKKAD: V T Balram MLA hoisted the national flag wearing a lungi on Independence Day. Balram came wearing the lungi while attending the Independence Day celebrations organized by Thrithala Grama Panchayat.

The incident comes amid the ongoing Lungiwala controversy after BJP MP Sushmita Dev reportedly referred to CPM MP John Brittas as Lungiwala in the Rajya Sabha. Brittas criticized the remark, alleging that it was intended to insult his South Indian identity. It was against this backdrop that V T Balram participated in the Independence Day celebrations wearing a lungi. He also shared a Facebook post on it.

His Facebook post
Freedom to choose one’s dress,
Freedom from discrimination and segregation,
Freedom to preserve cultural practices,
Freedom to live with a dignified identity,
The layers of freedom are many.
It is our responsibility to fight for each of them.
Inaugurated the Independence Day celebrations of the Thrithala Panchayat this morning.
Independence Day greetings to everyone.
