Warning of extremely heavy rainfall; eight districts on red alert, chances of flash floods and landslides

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rains in the state. A red alert has been issued in eight districts today due to the possibility of very heavy rain. A red alert has been issued in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. The district administration has warned that people should be vigilant as there is a possibility of receiving 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rain in 24 hours.

An orange alert has been issued in Alappuzha, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram today. In addition, a yellow alert has been issued in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam today. An orange alert has been issued in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod tomorrow. A yellow alert has also been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram.

There is a possibility of extremely heavy rain creating accidents. Heavy rainfall is expected in a short period of time. Therefore, there is a possibility of mountain torrents and flash floods, and waterlogging in urban areas and low-lying areas in general. The public and government agencies are advised to be extremely vigilant as there is a possibility of landslides and mudslides if the rain continues.
