THRISSUR: Actor and writer V K Sreeraman has expressed regret over his remarks criticising Pulikali, the traditional folk art form of Thrissur, following widespread criticism of his Facebook post. Sreeraman had earlier described Pulikali as an art form that was "disgusting to watch", triggering a backlash on social media. He has now said that his expression of opinion was not mature enough and acknowledged that his choice of words had caused hurt to Pulikali artists and others associated with the traditional art form.
In a fresh Facebook post, Sreeraman said his earlier remarks had drawn a wide range of reactions, both in support and against them, apart from the usual abusive comments.
“One comment that caught my attention said that Thrissur Pulikali is essentially a single-theme carnival, while Kasaragod Pulikali is a martial art form. It is an art form that combines physical skill and martial arts and requires training and flexibility. A carnival does not require all this. Its main purpose is to create a visual spectacle,” he said.
Sreeraman said he understood the point made in the comment and admitted that his earlier opinion was not expressed with enough maturity.
“I understand that this opinion is valid. Therefore, I realise that my expression of opinion was not mature enough. I hope artists and organisers will make efforts to make this dance form even more beautiful,” he wrote.
He also acknowledged that his remarks and inappropriate choice of words had caused emotional distress to Pulikali artists and those connected with the art form.
“I understand that my expression of opinion and inappropriate choice of words caused hurt to Pulikali artists and others associated with it. I express my regret over it,” Sreeraman added.
