THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior Congress leaders have initiated efforts to resolve the ongoing standoff between the Chief Minister and the Kerala Students Union (KSU) regarding the appointment of government pleaders. The party’s attempt to broker a truce is expected to intensify on Monday, when the Chief Minister arrives in the capital.
KPCC President Sunny Joseph and senior leader V.M. Sudheeran are scheduled to hold discussions with the Chief Minister to address the growing friction that has left the party divided. The dispute has exposed a sharp divide within the party. Leaders aligned with K.C. Venugopal argue that the Chief Minister’s recent actions are demoralising for grassroots party workers. Conversely, those supporting V.D. Satheesan contend that the ongoing agitation is unnecessary and counterproductive, effectively providing fodder for the political opposition.
K.C. Venugopal, addressing the media following the Oommen Chandy memorial meeting in Puthuppally, appeared to offer a veiled critique of the current leadership style. Invoking the legacy of the late Oommen Chandy, he described him as a leader who never acted with vindictiveness, even toward his detractors. Venugopal also extended explicit support to KSU leader Aloshious Xavier, acknowledging the distress caused to student activists by recent events.
The rift has prompted public displays of solidarity with the student wing. During a memorial meeting at the KPCC headquarters, V.M. Sudheeran publicly embraced Aloshious Xavier, praising his courage to voice his opinions and stand by his convictions.
Beyond the specific issue of KSU appointments, influential party figures are reportedly advising the Chief Minister to exercise greater caution in his public statements. Critics point to the recent incident regarding the Tata Group’s proposed investment in the ship-building yard—which required a subsequent clarification due to a lack of verification—as a clear example of the need for improved due diligence before making official claims. Indications suggest that the Chief Minister may grant an audience to Aloshious Xavier, a move intended to pacify the student wing and restore internal cohesion within the party.
