The number of people using smartphones is increasing day by day. Around 99 per cent of them use WhatsApp. Although WhatsApp is considered a secure messaging app, sharing a personal phone number remains one of its biggest privacy concerns. When users are added to a WhatsApp group, all members can see each other’s phone numbers. This often creates privacy and security concerns.
Now, WhatsApp is bringing a solution to this issue. The upcoming update will introduce a feature that users around the world have been waiting for. Users will no longer need to share their phone numbers to chat with family, friends, or for business purposes. The company said millions of WhatsApp users will get this feature through the new update.
Instead of a phone number, users will be able to choose a username to protect their privacy. After the update, when someone adds you to a group, other members will see your username instead of your phone number.
Currently, more than three billion people use WhatsApp worldwide. Similar to Meta’s other social media platforms, each username will be unique and only one user can have a particular username.
Users will be able to reserve their usernames in the coming months. The company will notify users when the feature becomes available in their country.
WhatsApp also said that social media creators and small business owners may be able to use their existing usernames from Facebook or Instagram on WhatsApp as well.
