MUMBAI: In a tragic road accident, at least 13 people were killed and over 20 others sustained injuries after a tempo traveller carrying a wedding party rammed into a container truck on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway in Palghar, Maharashtra. The incident occurred today at around 4:00 PM.
According to the police, there were over 40 passengers aboard the tempo traveller at the time of the accident. The impact of the collision was so severe that both vehicles overturned on the highway.
Emergency responders and locals faced significant challenges in extricating the passengers trapped inside the mangled wreckage. The injured were rushed to a hospital in Dundalwadi for immediate medical attention. The accident resulted in a massive traffic gridlock on the national highway for a considerable period.
Preliminary police investigations suggest that overspeeding and reckless driving by the tempo traveller operator led to the fatal crash.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep condolences over the tragedy and announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.
