IMPHAL: Two children were killed in a grenade attack suspected to be carried out by Kuki rebels in Manipur's Bishnupur district. An angry mob attacked a nearby CRPF camp, accusing the force of failing to provide security to citizens.
Security personnel had to fire in the air to control the violence. Several people were reportedly injured in the incident. The injured were immediately admitted to hospitals in Imphal. Massive protests were reported at several places, including road blockades. The governor has temporarily suspended internet data services in five districts in view of the law and order situation in the state.
The governor's official order states that the action is to prevent the spread of false information through social media and to prevent further conflicts caused by the spread of hate speech and other content through videos.
The public outcry flared up after a five-month-old girl and her five-year-old brother, who were undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in a bomb attack, died today. Their father is currently serving in the army. The children's mother was working as a nurse in a hospital in Guwahati. Tension still prevails in the area.
