ALAPPUZHA: The Alappuzha district is on high alert after two women lost their lives to snakebites in separate incidents occurring just a day apart. On Friday, 65-year-old Indira, a resident of Vaishyambhagam village in Kuttanad and wife of Raghu, died after being bitten by a cobra. The incident took place around 5:00 PM near the outdoor toilet of her home. Although she was immediately rushed to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital and administered anti-venom in the Intensive Care Unit, she succumbed to the venom at approximately 9:30 PM. She is survived by her children, Kavya and Divya, and her son-in-law, Aneesh; her body currently remains in the hospital morgue.

This tragedy follows another fatal snakebite reported on Thursday in Kayamkulam, where a woman also succumbed to a bite under similar circumstances. These consecutive deaths within the same district have sparked significant alarm across the region, highlighting a dangerous surge in snake-related fatalities. With both the Kayamkulam and Kuttanad incidents claiming lives within a 48-hour window, the community is facing a heightened sense of vulnerability, prompting calls for extreme vigilance in rural and water-logged residential areas.
