THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Electricity charges are likely to surge in the state from April 1. There will be an increase of 12 paise per unit. The rate hike announced by the Electricity Regulatory Commission last December will come into effect in April. Water charges will also increase by 5 percent.
The Regulatory Commission announced the electricity rates till 2027 in December. The rates for the financial year 2025-26 will come into effect on April 1. The increase is an average of 12 paise per unit for domestic consumers. The fixed charge will also increase by Rs 5 to Rs 30 based on various slabs. Those who use 100 units per month will see an increase of Rs 32 in their bi-monthly bill, including the fixed charge. KSEB is targeting an additional revenue of Rs 357.28 crore through the tariff hike. In addition, a fuel surcharge of seven paisa per unit will be levied in April.
There will be a five percent increase in water rates as per the central government's policy. Last year, the state government waived this, considering the hardships faced by people.
