THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is joy and prosperity all around as Malayalees all over the world celebrate Thiruvonam today. Flowers, sumptuous meals, family gatherings and games will mark the most important day of the Onam festival. Thiruvonam is believed to be the day when King Mahabali visits his subjects in Kerala. Special ceremonies in connection with Thiruvonam are ongoing at the Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy Temple. Other temples in the state, too, are witnessing a massive rush.
Celebrations have been organised all over the state under the auspices of clubs and associations. There is an air of jamboree and exuberance palpable among people in the state as the celebrations are expected to last for many more days.
The end of the dry season in Karkkadakam and the arrival of the harvest month of Chingam, signals the arrival of days of agricultural prosperity. Although the courtyards filled with Thumba, Tulsi, and Mukkutti are almost a thing of the past today, Malayalees still celebrate Onam in its all grandeur by visiting market and getting hold of all flowers to decorate their houses.
